Ahead of the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence

2026-03-16 - 07:47

Montenegro is celebrating 20 years since the restoration of its independence in 2026. Matica Crnogorska (*Montenegrin Cultural Society) and the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU) will organise a series of cultural, scientific, and artistic events throughout the year. The celebrations, coordinated with state authorities, will be marked as solemn and dignified. Central events will focus on 21 May, the date of the 2006 independence referendum, and will feature a distinctive visual identity designed by Suzana Pajovic of the University of Montenegro. CANU will also mark its 55th anniversary under a shared logo for exhibitions, concerts, roundtables, and official correspondence. The state jubilee programme, overseen by a government committee led by Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, defines central ceremonies and cultural activities, emphasising coordination among institutions to ensure the anniversary is properly celebrated. For context, Montenegro’s 2006 referendum resulted in 55.5% voting for independence, with 86.5% voter turnout.
