“Safari in Sarajevo”, a new novel by Andrej Nikolaidis, explores crimes committed during the siege of Sarajevo, focusing on the brutal killing of civilians. Published as part of a contemporary Montenegrin fiction series, the noir novel examines violence, trauma, and the persistence of evil through a story involving wealthy foreign perpetrators who treated the war as a form of “safari.” The plot follows a mother seeking revenge for her murdered child by hiring a detective to track down a sniper, reflecting themes of justice, trauma, and moral decay. Nikolaidis said he drew on newly available information and psychological profiles of perpetrators, portraying them as powerful individuals who believed themselves above the law.
