WIZZ Air to open Podgorica base at the end of March

Wizz Air, the biggest airline in Montenegro, is preparing to open its new base at Podgorica Airport on 30 March, marking an important step in the airline’s continued expansion in Montenegro and bringing a wave of new travel opportunities for passengers in the country. With the base opening, Wizz Air will station two modern Airbus A321neo aircraft in Podgorica and launch 17 new routes connecting Montenegro’s capital with key European cities: Malmo, Paris, Hamburg, Maastricht, Catania (Sicily), Bratislava, Barcelona, Basel, Rzeszow, Rome, Baden-Baden, Cologne, Ljubljana, Poznan, Vilnius, Gdansk and Wroclaw. The expansion will add one million additional seats this year, significantly increasing connectivity to and from Podgorica and making it easier for travellers to explore Europe while welcoming more international visitors to Montenegro. “This month marks an important milestone not only for Wizz Air, but also for Montenegro. I am proud to announce that on March 30th we will officially open our newest base at Podgorica Airport.” said Roland Tischner, Managing Director of Wizz Air Hungary. “With the opening of this base, Podgorica joins the growing family of Wizz Air, as the 37th base, strengthening its position as a key gateway between Montenegro and the rest of the continent. At Wizz Air, we believe in connecting people, creating opportunities, and making travel accessible for everyone. Montenegro is a country with great tourism potential and strong international appeal, and we are proud to support its continued growth. This base opening is not just an expansion of our network, but a long-term commitment to Montenegro, its people, and its future. We look forward to welcoming even more travellers to Podgorica and to building even stronger connections between Montenegro and Europe in the years ahead.” Roko Tolić, Chief Executive Officer of Airports of Montenegro stated, “Airports of Montenegro is currently facing what could best be described as “a welcome operational challenge.” On one hand, we are pleased to have responded to the needs and expectations of both the public and the business community. Securing 17 new routes with a single airline partner, Wizz Air, within one coordinated wave represents an achievement that typically requires many years of network development. On the other hand, we remain fully aware that operations are being conducted within limited infrastructure capacity. While passenger comfort may be temporarily affected, safety and security standards will continue to be maintained at the highest level, fully aligned with international aviation requirements, as has always been the case. We are prepared to operate on an extended, near 24-hour basis. I am confident that our employees, as seasoned professionals, will successfully handle this traffic volume and the demanding season ahead. At present, the latest scheduled arrival is at 01:05, which effectively means that our staff will remain on duty until approximately 02:00, given the requirement for personnel to stay at their posts until the last passenger has exited the terminal. The first departure is scheduled for 06:00, requiring staff presence from 03:45—fifteen minutes prior to the opening of check-in counters.” Roko Tolić The base opening is also expected to deliver meaningful benefits for the local economy. The development will create approximately 80 direct jobs with Wizz Air and support around 700 additional jobs indirectly across tourism, aviation, and local services. Wizz Air has been steadily expanding its presence in Montenegro since launching its first flight between Podgorica and Milan Bergamo in 2016, carrying nearly two million passengers to and from the country since then. Today the airline offers 24 routes from Podgorica to 12 countries, and with the upcoming base opening, Wizz Air will become the number one airline at Podgorica Airport and the largest carrier in Montenegro overall. The expansion comes as Wizz Air continues to grow across Europe. In 2025, the airline added 42 new aircraft to its fleet, launched more than 320 new routes, and carried 68.6 million passengers. As the airline enters 2026, it aims to serve more than 80 million travellers, further strengthening its position as one of Europe’s leading low-cost carriers. With the launch of new routes and the opening of its Podgorica base just over a week away, Wizz Air is set to bring even greater connectivity, travel opportunities, and economic benefits to Montenegro.
